Lament and Labor

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?

    How long will you hide your face from me?

How long must I take counsel in my soul

    and have sorrow in my heart all the day?

How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;

    light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,

lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”

    lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

But I have trusted in your steadfast love;

    my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

I will sing to the Lord,

    because he has dealt bountifully with me.

-Psalm 13

O Lord, how long shall I cry for help,

    and you will not hear?

Or cry to you “Violence!”

    and you will not save?

Why do you make me see iniquity,

    and why do you idly look at wrong?

Destruction and violence are before me;

    strife and contention arise.

So the law is paralyzed,

    and justice never goes forth.

For the wicked surround the righteous;

    so justice goes forth perverted.

-Habakkuk 1:2-4

How long, O Lord…

…will our protests be indistinguishable

from our prayers?

…will injustice prevail

while we cry out to the God of justice?

…can we be expected to endure?

How long, O Lord…

…will politics and prejudice

masquerade as your Gospel?

…will –isms run rampant in the midst of those

whom you have to chosen to be agents of love?

…can we continue in disobedience?

How long, O Lord…

…will wives fear for husbands,

children for fathers?

…will we, the intended keepers of the peace,

act out of fear instead of courage?

…can we survive without peace that passes understanding?

However long, O Lord…

…we will continue to fight

the good fight.

…we will press on toward the goal

of our heavenly calling.

…we can endure as Christ did and do the work of the cross.

Grace and peace,
